(3) Hindi raw nya sinasadya

-tulalang isda

Hindi raw nya sinasadya. Aksidente lang daw. Natabig lang. Naitulak.

Independence and Democracy Were Never Twins

by piece of meat (ni kapurit na laman)

More than three centuries we fought for our independence against the colonial rule of Spain, then two scores to get it from the United States, and half a decade we shed blood to win it over the Japanese imperialism. Discounting the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, we all did theses to win our most coveted prize, our Independence. But independence does not entail democracy. We all actually think that independence and democracy are twins, but they were not. Half a millennium is known and written in our sociopolitical history, but never had we achieved Authentic Democracy.

Are we truly democratic?

This question would demand an answer to the question "what is democracy?" Simply said, it is the government of the people. Etymologically, it came from the Greek δημοκρατία (demokratia), which roughly means the rule of the people, coined from δμος (demos, people) and κράτος (kratos, power). Quoting the Great President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, in his Gettysburg Address, it is the "...government of the people, by the people, and for the people..." and that form of government "...shall not perish from the earth." But as we speak, we find democracy under a different light. It is rather a government to off the people, to buy the people, and to poor the people.

We have actually suffered cultural murder from our conquistadores (conquerors), but still, we are longing for a real democratic society, free from external rule. Our constitution alone is based on the American Constitution; our government is almost American, except that it is not federal. Many of our cultural bias were not actually Asian. The world even questioned the authenticity of being a Filipino. So how we could be truly a democratic nation?

In a Nation Losing Their Identity, it is Impossible to be Democratic

We once protested about the biscuit produced in the Iberian Peninsula. And this biscuit was branded Filipinos by Kraft Foods. It is sold in Spain and Portugal under Artiach's brand. And in 1999, the Philippine government taking this as an insult, because of the apparent color of the biscuit which is dark outside and white inside in reference to our racial identity, filed a diplomatic protest against the government of Spain, the European Commission, and the manufacturer, Nabisco Iberia. In his resolution, then Rep. Heherson T. Alvarez, of the Fourth District of Isabela, stated that "these food items could be appropriately called by any other label, but the manufacturers have chosen our racial identity, and they are now making money out of these food items." With the same resolution, Rep. Alvarez instructed the Department of Foreign Affairs "to immediately conduct a thorough investigation into this matter, and determine the use and misuse of our racial identity to promote or sell a particular brand of cookies or any other product." Nothing happened about this protest, since up until now, Filipinos is still on the market, and I have actually tasted one when my professor brought a pack in our class while we discuss about our identity.

Many of our names were actually an apparent result of mix culture. Our last names alone, a vast majority is of Spanish origin: Santos (Saints), De Guzman (of Guzman), Enriquez (son of Enrico), Rodriguez (son of Rodrigo), etc. Others would be Chinese, like Lee, Sy, Chan, and Yang to name a few. While a small population have american surnames. Few you could hear surnames that sound local, and most were ethnic slurs, like Bantot (fetid or stinky), Supsup (variation of the surname Supsupin, which means to suck), Sumugat (get wounded), and many others. However, some of the Tagalog surnames were actually good, like Matapang (brave), Dimaguiba (indestructible), and Masipag (industrious).

But, how did we get all these names? It was Governor-General Narciso Clavería y Zaldúa who gave the surnames to many of the Filipinos. Many Filipinos in that time have no surnames, and to avoid confusion, on November 11, 1849, he issued a decree sending a long list of surnames to the local officials. Surnames given to locals were either in relation to the nature of their work or family business, like Mercado which means market, or in relation to their social status, like Guinto (Gold), hence, this family are rich people. In some cases, because of their criminal records, others were named Manggagahasa (rapist).

Now, another influence is the system of our Education, though ours is 10 years of basic education compared to the 12 years of education in the United States. Thomasites were one of the first influences of the Americans after they bought us from Spain. This is to instill the American culture to the Filipinos. In 1901, they were brought here through USS Thomas to teach the Filipinos the basics of English, including reading and writing.

The free enterprise that we have, our economy, is very American, our economy is more dependent to the economy of the United States than the economy of neighboring Asian countries. Most of our brands, products, and our daily living per se is American. We cannot live a life without the taste of Coca-Cola, Kraft, McDonalds, KFC, etc. Many of our apparels were actually from the US, and Nike dominates the market. And majority of the BPO companies in the Philippines cater American clients. Billions of calls were coming from the United States.

With all these, what we get is a cultural murder, and admitted I am, I am also a victim. Quoting a good friend, "...we have never won any fight at all. We have just perfected our dependence to US all this time." In the fight for identity, we tried to assimilate ourselves with the American culture. We are actually no different now with the American-Spanish people.

Culture of Corruption

Corruption in the Philippines is actually as ancient as Philippine politics. The main reason why the Philippines remains as a developing nation, a third world country. Allegedly, majority of our budget goes to corruption of public officials. Many of the government projects were questionable. A vast majority of which was from the past administration. In order to evade all possible litigation after her term of office as the President, now  Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo seated a lot of people close to her in highly influential positions in the government. There's the issue of the Ombudsman which has been resolved recently, and the majority of Supreme Court Justices were Arroyo appointees that clings to many of her legislative agendas. And here we discount the swing representatives in the Congress. Up until now, the epitome of corruption is at large.

In our congress, our beloved representatives, who were supported by many businessmen during their campaigns, would always have legislation in favor to these men who funded their way to the House of the Representatives. The supposed representatives of the democratic people of the Philippines were actually representatives of the rich people in our country.

We do even have a party representative who's a son of the former President who represents the security guards in the Congress. This is a clear blasphemy of the sectoral representation, he is not a security guard, not even in one of his movies that flopped. But the Commission on Election junked the electoral protest against the said congressman. Well, the Arroyo clan actually dominates the clannish culture not only in Philippine Congress but also in Philippine Politics at large.

Off the People, Buy the People, and Poor the People

Every election, the only time we can call ourselves citizen of this country as we practice our most sacred right of suffrage, many Filipinos will sell their vote for an amount that will make him suffer for 3-6 years. In every election that we do not pick our candidates with full personal discretion, we lose the AUTHENTIC DEMOCRATIC RIGHT we only have. Every time we do otherwise, this authentic democratic right that we have is voided by the Antithetic form of democracy, we choose to be off, to be bought, and then later, to suffer from poverty.

A lot of people would cry then to these people, but hell are these people who only knows how to cry every time they suffer. It is them who choose these officials, take the consequences of their great misconduct therefore.

Never

We can never achieve a truly independent and democratic nation if we do not learn how to be independent from the people who are above us. They are the servants, not us. Teach them how to serve you. Make them pay for every vote they have received. We maybe are independent superficially, but we are never truly democratic.

Police on Horseeey?!

ni N.S.O.

BREAKING NEWS TODAY:
Due to vast array of anomalies that Philippine National Police (PNP) is taking, the senate thumbs up to the idea that PNP will be using HORSE in their everyday patrol instead of their rusty mobile cars.

Huwan: What?! Well, that's okay as long as it is not a second-hand.

Here are some pictures that PNP hope to achieved in their idea of horses as replacement to their mobile cars:

See?!

Life is Gay

by piece of meat (ni kapurit na laman)

Disclaimer

Before reading this blog post, please consider the following:

1. The following blog is a Homeric simile about life;
2. It was written by the blogger when he was in his most irrational state;

3. It was written in a first-person narration;
4. The blogger is not homophobic nor a homosexual, again, this is just a simile about life; and,
5. Everything written here, like all other similes, is a fiction. Hence, all characters appearing in this blog are fictitious. Any resemblance to fictitious events or persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Hence, let's start:

Life is Gay

Do you know that Life has a gender? Regardless what is your sex or your sexual orientation, life has its own gender. It belongs to the third sex. Life is gay.

Life is gay. Yes, he is gay. With all due respect to him, Life is happy like how we usually see gays in real life and we usually appreciate such Life's character. But there are times, that in Life's company we no longer feel happy.

Life is gay, and I am his lover. And like you, yes you, I am the lover of my life. We usually enjoy the company of each other, and we love being together. No one will ever separate us except for Death or another Life coming into my life.

How did we started?

Life and I were just acquaintances at the beginning, stranger to each other. We befriended each other, then we started a good relationship as friends. We usually hang out together. We went to cinemas together to watch movies, we eat together til we're full, and we drink together til we get drunk. We go home late at night.

At first, my intention was just to benefit from Life. From him I received a lot of gifts I never had which made me happy. With him, I have experienced a lot of things I never tried which made me even happier. Life has become my milking cow. From him I almost get my living. I have to do this, because I know Life, like gays of his like, only wants me.  Life, like gays of his like, s**ks and f**ks. Hell I know about all these things because of my past experiences, f**k life or life will f**k you, so you choose. Before life f**ks me, milk him first and make a delicious FroYo (frozen yogurt) out of it, earning me a dollar or two for every serving of it. I did this to Life for quite some time.

We later call each other as best friends. We became even more intimate. When Life has a problem, I find solutions to solve Life's problems. In exchange, when I have a problem, Life comforts me. Unknowingly, for all what he did and with his unrequited love for me, I learned to love him beyond my intention. We began sleeping together. We're more than best friends now.

Like all love stories, there's a struggle we have to face. Me and Life have some conflicts. With the effort coming from each other, almost all conflicts, misunderstandings, and problems were settled, but still, a number of those would remain an issue.

To cut a struggling love story short, because I felt that I became no better person with him, we ended what we thought our good and lasting relationship. Because of what happened, Life died, I mourned, and I move on.

Later...

I found a new Life, and it follows almost the same plot as I tell you this story.

Un Poema por una Perdurable Amistad

Hijo del Hombre Bueno:
mi más querido Hermano,
mi Amigo mejor,
es Hombre de Cultivo.

Aunque duda está ahí,
todavía, gestionamos nuestra amistad.
Encuadernados por el nudo del amor,
y, sobre todo, guardaron por confianza.

Isang Tula ng isang Walang Hanggang Pagkakaibigan

Anak ng Mabuting Lalaki:
aking pinakamamahal na Kapatid,
aking matalik na Kaibigan,
ay isang taong may kultura.

Kahit may pagdududa,

Himno a Isis, siglos III o IV (?),

Two days ago, President Benigno Aquino III said his lovelife is like softdrinks (Coke to be particular). From regular, then light and now zero. Well said Mr. President. Clap, clap, clap. SCOOP. After that speech the next scene in taken by KMGscoopers and it goes like this:

KMGscooper1: Asan na si PNoy?
KMGscooper2: Ayun pumasok na sa kwarto niya. (Okay time to use our invisibility cloak, borrowed from Harry Potter)

PNoy: Tang-Ina This wala akong lablayp.
Then he played this song on his ipad (headset on, loud enough for the person next to him to hear--jamming)

Ang kabuluhan ng " manners" o kabutihang asal

-tulalang isda

(Something like that. Sorry sabaw na malabnaw.)

Mayroong kaginhawaan at 'sense of relief' itong naidudulot sa sarili.

Wala tayong magagawa dahil sa wika nga ni Heidegger (imbento na lang ata to) as being(s)-in-the-world, we essentially co-exist with the objective reality and other beings. And thus, we should act under the light of "care." (echos)

imahe mula sa irancartoon.ir
Sabi nga ni Jean-Paul Sartre, "Hell is other people."

O baka may pumasok pala. O lumabas.

An OBITUARY to JESUS CHRIST

gawa ng ini-ibig ni nakikipagtalik sa oras
FOREWORD: The following is an obituary. It is an obituary to JESUS CHRIST. The writer’s thoughts are of course highly contestable. However, the writer asks the READER to please take time and digest the thoughts presented in this paper prior to any violent reactions and comments the title might provoke. This is an obituary. And if you know what an obituary means, you’ll read this through.
Newspapers (at least in certain newspapers) could not miss or scrap out the obituary section. Some consider this possible the best part of the newspaper: it displays the BEST possibilities of a particular human being. It exposes that GOOD in every man. It makes known to humanity the greatest achievements that specific individual has ever contributed to humanity. But in a way, these obituaries are more often than not left out – singled out – for entertainment, front page, etc. I am not saying this is a bad attitude or mentality. I am saying that people should also try to see and consider this section of the newspaper. Who knows? It might help change one’s outlook of life.
This note, as already mentioned above, is an obituary to Jesus Christ. Yes. Jesus Christ is dead. Jesus Christ is no longer. This is a very brave statement coming from me. But I take up my courage and say once more: YES, JESUS CHRIST IS LONG DEAD. As an effect, people’s reaction is in question form: what made me say so? In addition, a more intellectual person would ask: how did Jesus die? The first question may be answered in many ways. Some would say that basing upon my statement, I am an atheist. I am a thinker, yes, but undeniably I am a Christian – a Roman Catholic as I write this note. People may brand me with words like: agnostic, non-believer, atheist, cult-member, etc. I don’t care. Really, I don’t. What matters is how the second question is answered. And that I will discuss in length in the succeeding paragraphs.
How did Jesus die? This is an intriguing question. A literal man would answer: by Pilate’s hands, or by the chief priests’. These are not satisfactory answers. Let me rephrase the question (and I hope in rephrasing the question, the subject matter might shed some light on this discussion). Why did Jesus die? The answer: Because we KILLED him! Yes. We killed him by our own hands, by our own hearts, and more specifically by our own minds.
Who was Jesus Christ? Let me simply state: he is God, and was man. He is the second person in the Holy Trinity: the Son. And he was man through Mary and Joseph. But now, he is dead. Christ preached several things to the “chosen” and not-chosen people alike. He performed “miracles” to both. There is no place he’d be unwilling to go so long as there is something necessary to do there. After having some acquaintance and a good deal of followers, he caught attention. His service was cut short. In the end, he was crucified. It is believed that after 3 days he rose again. After that, he left humanity an example: a Christian example, a mark specifically designed by Jesus Christ himself. This time, this mark is no longer exclusive for the “chosen” people. It is open, free-for-all. However, after some centuries, he died again. This time, there were no chief priests nor Pontius Pilate behind the scenes. This time, his people killed him.
People have already forgotten the significance of Christ’s teaching.True, there are a number of them. Then, there came a few more additions by the Alteri Christi (other Christs – forgive my Latin if it’s wrong). But by essence, his teaching could be summarized in two – if not reduced: Love your neighbor as you love YOURSELF (1), and The least you did to your brethren, you did it to me (2).
A mentor of mine told me of three great philosophers who have ever lived on earth. Yes. Christ was one of them. I have my prejudiced philosophers. And YES, Christ is one of them! Make no mistake: he is a thinker – a great thinker at that – and as a thinker I speak of him.
What about his teachings? Simple: it could have drawn out the best possible of Earth, of this world we live in. Christ taught man to love his neighbor as he loves himself. Never did he taught to love your neighbor less than you love yourself. It does not speak, also, of loving one’s neighbor ABOVE one’s self. It simply asks man: Love you neighbor AS YOU LOVE YOURSELF. I believe the principle is highlighted already. And for the sake of goodness, please, stop distorting the teaching. So, altruists, and those other preachers of morality who use religion as an avenue to ask man to denounce themselves and live for others, as a mask to counteract the shame of such a betrayal, and as a vanguard to shield your contradicting premises, THINK AGAIN!
The second one is more controversial. People have forgotten that religion ought to make this world a better place to live in. However, things have turned around. Now, it is more of suffering more on earth so you’d reap your rewards on the other world. Let me clear myself: I don’t really care if such other worlds exist. But I am aware of the fact that this land my feet set on is real. And that I ought to take good care of it.
People go to church every Sundays, and they go to hell the rest of the week. This is a statement of one of my mentors in the University. And in my years of “service” to the church, I have met a good deal of persons who live up and testify to this statement. These persons make it real. Despite the reading of the scripture, and interpretation of it, as if nothing happened in the Sunday Mass. People have forgotten that the church’s door is also one of the most important parts of the place: it is where and when one’s duty starts to take place. But as I said, people have forgotten of that basic principle. They have come to believe that being a good Christian means going to hear mass every Sundays, regular confessions, etc. These are just superficial. I won’t say what is expected of a good Christian. As a person, he or she is already given the tools needed for survival; these tools need only be realized.
For sometime already, the point of origin barely remembered, there have been shifts man has failed to notice carefully. It might have been a moment too late already by the time he realized such changes. One of the distinct shifts is the concept of service. Jesus himself was followed. He has couples of apostles and disciples at his beckon. But he did not demand too much service. Truth be told, these apostles and/or disciples are getting familiarized with Jesus’ teachings so as for them to continue what was started. But the following “successors” had distorted this by the institution of the church. From the original concept of doing God service through His people, the focus is now on God. (PERIOD) There is a neglect of the concern for the people. MOREOVER, there is detrimental attitude of forsaking one’s self for GOD. Question: If God is indeed perfect, omnipotent, omniscient, etc., does He really need to be praised and worshiped MORE THAN what is ought? (That is if God ever needed praise and worship.) More regrettable, however, is the fact that God is given more attention than the needs of his people. REMEMBER: God sent His only Son to redeem the world. But it was useless. The people have forgot the entire sense of it.
It seems that Jesus’ first teaching is forgotten: love yourself as you love your neighbor. Putting in priority God’s people or the people that Jesus consciously died for on the cross is not an act of idolatry. The term idol has more meaning to what the communal standards imply (for a more detailed discussion of this term, refer to my previous note). So, Jesus asks humanity to be an instrument of God’s love and peace by making this place a better place to live in. He never asked to be praised and worshiped for saving us. He asked that humanity VALUE his death on the cross. He did not ask anybody or anyone to establish a variety of institutions and interpret his death on the cross.
The least you did to your brethren, you did it to me. This statement, finally, does not mean that you focus on your brethren alone. This does not mean man is supposed to merge and indulge himself in communal living whatever and abandon that POWERFUL word – I – in exchange for the word brethren: WE. It must be remembered that one needs to love one’s self to be able to love your neighbors. Now, i ask the moralist altruist using Christianity or any religious institution for cover: How could you give yourself to your “fellow brothers and/or sisters” without having a self in the beginning? How could you ever imagine a community which practices self-denial in service of fellow brothers and/or sisters? And in such a community, who are those brothers and/or sisters when everybody serves one another? It does not make sense.
Praising and worshiping God (the Holy Trinity) does not reserve humanity slots in the Kingdom of Heaven. Praying the rosary alone (without taking care to live up to its meaning) will not make that claimed PARAISO one step closer to reality. Doing Taize or any sort of meditation without realizing the hierarchy of needs of yourself and your neighbors will not help in the development of your being. These superficial acts without ever realizing the nature and the reason behind it (if the reason is not available for SOME reasons, discovering the cause is enough), will bring distortion and confusion in one’s quest on earth.
Jesus would be sad. He willingly died on the cross to save the people just to see them fighting each other for another day. He consciously gave his human life just to see that the earth is still as war-torn as before. He shared his “spirit” just to see that his “representatives” make a good deal of distortion of his teachings. That is what is happening in reality. That is what you, the reader is experiencing in the present time. And most probably, that is what you are doing.
That is why this is called an obituary. This is a statement of what would have been called a Christ-ian world. This is a record of the foul interpretations and malpractices of certain individuals. If you ever have the feeling of getting mad, sad, and depressed after having read this obituary, but do nothing in return, shame on you. But for those who realize that something is to be done, that some things needed certain attention, let this obituary be a challenge – a challenge to stand up, a challenge to realize what was once a best possibility, and a challenge to rediscover the teaching of Jesus.
But as of this moment, let me pay this obituary to a man named Jesus Christ!
